Spooner, WI- The Wisconsin Lumberjacks are pleased to announce that 1999-born defenseman Cam Birkeland has committed to the team for the upcoming 2019-20 SIJHL season. Birkeland comes to the Lumberjacks after playing for the Minnesota Iron Rangers during the 2018-2019 season.

In 2018-19, Birkeland led his team’s defensive core in scoring with 20 points in 59 games played. He is the third new Lumberjacks that played for the Iron Rangers after fellow 1999-born forward Matt Turnbull and Lukas Lundgren signed with the team.

When asked about his signing, Birkeland had this to say, “Everyone wants to play college hockey and get a scholarship. It’s a main topic of conversation when you’re looking at what teams you want to go to. That’s the goal that I have, so finding a home for my last year with the right location for exposure and a staff that is willing to do what they can on their end to help me reach that goal, was a big factor in my decision to sign with the Lumberjacks.”

Associate Head Coach Garrett Hendrickson had this comment on the signing, “I’ve known Cam since my first year of coaching. He’s a guy that I know will bring positive leadership and veteran experience. Definitely a guy that comes in and helps anchor our defensive unit. The style of hockey we are going to play is one that I believe a guy like Birkeland will thrive in.”

Birkeland added, “I’m coming here to win. Of the guys that are already signed and a few others that I know the team has offered contracts to, I’m excited! I spoke with Coach Lein as we were going through everything today prior to my signing and I really liked what I was hearing. I think we are going to have a great year and I’m looking forward to joining the Spooner community.”
