Lumberjacks Ride 5 Goal 3rd Period to Victory

It was a wild 3rd period as the Lumberjacks scored 5 straight goals to secure a Saturday night win.

The game started on much more even footing than the night before with both teams playing to a standstill throughout much of the 1st period. Shots were 10-8 in favor of Kam River but neither team could find the 5 on 5 goal to open the scoring. Things changed after Sutton Majeske of the lumberjacks went to the box with a hooking penalty late in the 1st. Ryan Doucette would beat Rylan Freshwater to make it 1-0 with just over a minute remaining. He was assisted by Jeremy Dunmore and Liam Bell on the tally.

The Fighting Walleye would extend their lead 3 and a half minutes into the 2nd as Bronson Babyak found the back of the net to make it 2-0. Unlike Friday night the Lumberjacks would come storming back. It started when Dillon Phillips forced a turnover and entered the zone on a two on one. He would keep it himself and beat the goaltender to bring the game within 1. 4 minutes later Koen Burkholder would tie the game as he put a shot off the goalie and into the net making 2-2.

It didn’t take long for Kam River to reclaim their lead as 30 seconds into the 3rd period Carter Nailen would bury a one timer from the slot to make it 3-2. From that point the Lumberjacks found their offense. Wisconsin scored 4 goals in a span of 2 minutes to take a 6-3 lead. The goals came from Dillon Phillips, Collin Baker, Simon Davidson, and Nolan Fowler. With just over 5 minutes left to play the game went to 4 on 4 as penalties were assessed Riley Borody and Ryan Kayser. Kam River pulled their goalie down 3 to try and find a goal playing 5 on 4 without a goalie, but it only led to an empty netter for Phillips securing his hat trick. A scrum in front of the Lumberjacks net left Wisconsin with a 5-minute major penalty to kill for the rest of the game and Kam River was able to pull back 2 late goals to make the final tally 7-5. Rylan Freshwater made 32 saves and got the win in goal. Travis VanderZwaag was replaced in net after stopping 13 of 19, Ashton Sadauskas made 3 saves in relief.
