Miners take down Lumberjacks

RED LAKE, Ont. – The Red Lake Miners foursome of forwards Ryan Howe, Tucker Evans and Shaye Sommerfeld along with defenceman Carson Lux combined for 13 points to lead the Red Lake Miners to a 7-2 victory over the Wisconsin Lumberjacks Tuesday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Cochenour Arena.

Red Lake gained control early skating out to a 2-0 lead after one period of play on tallies from Sommerfeld and Evans.

Wisconsin cut into the deficit 30 seconds into the middle stanza when Dalton Garcia buried his seventh of the campaign.

However, the Miners responded with two goals from Howe and single off the stick of Carson Lux to go up by four after 40 minutes.

Evans jammed in his second of the night to add to the Red Lake cushion at 4:40 into the third while Morgan Venne added to the onslaught at 8:12.

The Lumberjacks did get one back in the back half of the final frame as recently acquired Austin Cardinal collected his first SIJHL marker to round out the scoring.

Shots on goal in the contest were 31 apiece with Samuel Gendron picking up the win for Red Lake.

Nathan Mueller started for Wisconsin and suffered the loss, allowing five against on 20 attempts while Hunter Adams handled nine of 11 in over 23 minutes of relief.
